Letter from former Assistant Superintendent Judith Harvey regarding curriculum development and proficiency based diplomas.
Curriculum development is ongoing in RSU #1. With the redesign of Maine’s Learning Results (MLR) to include new English Language Arts and Mathematics standards, we are working diligently to align our local RSU #1 standards with the MLR. You will find the reading and writing pieces on the sidebar of this webpage. The math standards are in process and will be posted as soon as they are complete.
Another major effort underway is gearing up to issue proficiency-based diplomas to all students beginning with the graduating class of 2020, our current 7th graders. Under state law, all Maine districts are to issue proficiency based diplomas to the class of 2018. Realizing, though, that many Maine districts will not be ready in three years, they have offered a waiver application process. We have taken advantage of the waiver which will result in our proficiency based diploma date being pushed back to 2020. (See the waiver application link on the sidebar.)
As you will notice when viewing the waiver application, Morse High School administrators and faculty have been already working hard to create systems that will support students as we gear up for this change. We will be offering a variety of opportunities to raise awareness about Proficiency Based Learning (PBL) for students, parents & the community over the next couple of years.
Find links to interesting informational items on the sidebar. One of the more informative pieces is the Maine Department of Education’s ‘Getting to Proficiency’ web page. On this page you will not only find written pieces of information but a variety of videos showing PBL in action in Maine schools.
As always, feel free to contact me with further questions.
