With the start of the school year, comes the start of the new physical education curriculum for all 3rd Graders in RSU1. As parents in the school system know, one of the unique aspects of RSU1’s physical education program is its commitment to a swim safety program offered during a six week unit of each 3rd Grade in RSU1’s physical education class.
Through this program, children who have never had swim lessons before are taught important and basic water safety rules. Those who already have some skills in the water receive lessons in stroke mechanics and reinforcement of those water safety rules. Regardless of the skill of the child, all come away from the program with an appreciation for the dangers of the water and for the great fun in the lifelong sport of swimming. This program would not be possible without the commitment of the community members who have funded this program since its founding more than five years ago. It is a program that takes place during the school day so it does not place an additional burden on parents to transport children at the close of the school day.
The program, however, is dependent upon private donations. Through past generous support of corporate partners such as Bath Savings Institution, First Federal Savings and Loan, Reed & Reed, and innumerable individual and family donors, RSU1 has been able to pay the Bath Area YMCA for lessons and provide all transportation for the children back and forth to the lessons.
Please consider being a partner in assuring that all children in RSU1 are safe near and in the water by making your check, large or small, payable to the RSU1: Frazier Metcalf Swim for Health Memorial Fund, 34 Wing Farm Parkway, Bath, ME 04530.
